9/11 Statistics and Facts
- American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower at 8:46am. This tower later collapsed at 10:28am.
- United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower at 9:03am, causing the building to eventually collapse at 9:59am.
- The death toll from the WTC attacks is 2,749 people.
- The mean age of the victims was 39 years old.
- With no other means of escape [due to fire and other blockades], around 200 people jumped from the twin towers in an attempt to exit the buildings.
- About 1600 bodies were identified, leaving around 10,000 unidentified body parts, belonging to some 1,100 people.
- Around 400 rescue workers were killed in the building’s collapse, most of whom were FDNY.
- About 16,000 people survived the attacks by escaping the buildings before they collapsed.
- In addition to the initial damage caused by the buildings’ destruction, fires loomed in the rubble for weeks after September 11th. Many poisonous chemicals, including asbestos and dioxin, were released into the air.
- To help with the relief effort, many public service workers from around the nation, such as firemen and police officers, came to New York City to help sort through the rubble.
