Character of the Soul
Carmen D. Muñoz
Carmen Munoz began writing this book during the ride home after her family drove from Texas to New Jersey to bring her back home from New York. She began writing “Character of the Soul” immediately after leaving New York because her inner voice challenged her to do so. However the book was not completed until six revisions and four years later.
Like the other mornings, the sun was already shinning brightly. The sky was clear. It looked as though it was going to be another beautiful day in New York. It was Tuesday, September 11, 2001. To get to work, I was taking my usual shortcut through the World Trade Center. About 7:10, I entered Tower One. I walked through the lobby and exited onto the courtyard and walked up Broadway to the office building. At about 8:00 or so, I telephoned Jason’s office to see if Ada had come to work. “Yes, she’s just arrived.”

So I walked over to meet Ada. We were engrossed in a conversation about the stitching scale when I felt a strong jolt under my feet. The jolt was so forceful that it literally lifted me off my seat. Ada and I looked at one another, wondering what all the noise was. Maybe a cabinet had fallen down on the floor above us.

Just then, Nicholas, an employee from Tim’s section, came running over to our side of the building and screamed hysterically, “Mother of God! One of the Twin Towers is on fire!” I turned my head to see him standing in front of a large picture window, looking up into the sky. “What?” I asked.

“One of the Twin Towers is on fire and smoking badly!” he cried out. Shocked, I leaped from my seat and ran the ten feet that separated me from where Nicholas was standing. The view I had of the Twin Towers was magnificent and clear. It was as if I could reach out and touch them. Clearly, Tower One was on fire.
